To compile 64 bit python on Mac
$ env CFLAGS='-arch x86_64' CPPFLAGS='-arch x86_64' LDFLAGS='-arch x86_64' \ ./configure --disable-toolbox-glue --prefix=/usr/local64 $ make $ make install
or
$ CC='gcc -m64' LDFLAGS=-m64 ./configure --disable-toolbox-glue --prefix=/usr/local64
