Why does my MacBook Pro track pad not respond?#

Sometimes the track pad will freeze but the buttons will still work. I'm pretty sure the problem is the aging battery. According to my battery status, it says "Needs replacing" so I think the battery may have swelled a bit. I saw some discussion on this on the web.
